We need to establish which syllabus and which criteria student is working towards. While we have experience of teaching most of the syllabuses in our chosen field, it is important that the student has a copy for himself/herself and that we can work towards what is required.
Our approach is both friendly and professional. We tend to supply extra materials free of charge. We tend to find that students have not been prepared properly in schools and colleges e.g. business studies and economics students should be reading newspapers and be up to date with current affairs in business and industry. We also focus on exam technique as we find many students worry about this area, not having had specific training.
If students require help with an assignment, we need to be given warning about the context of the assignment in order that we can prepare in advance, we do not prepare the assignment for the student, they have to prepare it themselves, but we are prepared to guide him/her through an assignment and assess the student's work. We do not flinch on ethics in this regard.
For teenage students we like to establish a good relationship with the parents. It often transpires that a parent can provide help for their offspring that they were not aware of, perhaps from their current working activities. This has happened with one student in February 2015. We also prefer a parent to be around the premises so we can review the progress of the lesson after it has concluded.
